General Mathematics - Operations on Whole Numbers & Their Properties

Some important points to remember
If a, b, c are any three whole numbers, then
  • a + b is a whole number
  • a X b is a whole number
  • a - b is not always a   whole number
  • a ÷ b is not always a   whole number
  • a + b = b + a
  • a - b ≠ b - a
  • a ✖ b = b ✖ a
  • a ÷ b ≠ b ÷ a, if a and b are different.
  • (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
  • (a ✖ b ) X c = a ✖ (b ✖ c)
  • (a - b) - c ≠ a - (b - c)
  • (a ÷ b) ÷ c ≠ a ÷ (b ÷ c)
  • a ✖ (b + c) = a ✖ b + a ✖ c
  • a ✖ (b- c) = a ✖ b - a ✖ c
  • a + 0 = 0 + a = a
  • a ✖ 1 = 1 ✖ a = a
  • a ✖ 0 = 0 ✖ a  = 0
  • a  ÷ 1 = a
  • a  ÷ a = 1, if a  ≠ 0
  • 0 ÷ a = 0, if a  ≠ 0
  • Division by 0 is not defined.
  • Dividend = Divisor ✖ Quotient + Remainder
